Every Beat, Your Way.

GroupMix is a Max for Live device that brings beat-level track switching to Ableton Live's Group Tracks. Paint a visual grid to freely collage sub-tracks, instantly creating endless rhythmic combinations — with real-time playback and Bounce output that match perfectly.

One of a Kind

There's virtually nothing like it in the entire M4L ecosystem. GroupMix introduces beat-level track switching as a brand-new creative workflow — not an effect, not a sampler, but a whole new way to arrange.

Instant Results

Drop it on a Group Track, roll the dice a few times, hit play. From zero to surprise in seconds. Chance weights, Crossfade, and Dynamic mode make randomization musical, not mindless.

What You Hear Is What You Bounce

Built on a signal-rate engine, Export and Bounce output is identical to real-time playback. Many M4L devices can't do this — GroupMix can.

Features

1 — 64-Step Rhythmic Grid

The visual grid is the heart of GroupMix.

Each column is a time step, each row maps to a sub-track.

Click or drag to paint your rhythmic arrangement.

  • 4 Bars mode → 16th-note resolution (64 steps)
  • 8 Bars mode → 8th-note resolution (64 steps)
  • Alternating bar shading for clear orientation,
  • Real-time playhead highlight

2 — Smart Randomization

One-click randomize, or dial it down to a single bar.

Three modes cover everything from surgical control to total creative freedom.

  • Global Randomize — shuffle the entire grid in one click
  • Per-bar Randomize — each bar has its own dice icon, randomize just that bar
  • Dynamic Mode — auto-randomize at every bar boundary during playback for ever-evolving patterns
  • Block / Beat Granularity — per-step vs. per-beat, two levels of randomization resolution

3 — Chance Weights

Not all tracks deserve equal attention.

Give your lead melody 100%, the noise layer 20%, the experimental track 0%

Eandomization automatically respects your weight preferences.

  • 6 weight levels: 0 / 20 / 40 / 60 / 80 / 100
  • Drag up/down on the left column to adjust
  • Chance = 0 → that track is never selected during randomization

4 — Crossfade Transitions

Crossfade creates smooth volume transitions between steps.

from subtle overlaps to full-bar ambient blends, all with a single control.

  • Exponential mapping curve: fine control at low values, sweeping transitions at high values
  • Automation-ready — draw Crossfade curves directly in Ableton's automation lane
  • Constant total volume during crossfades — zero sudden level jumps

5 — Control Mode (Fader / Mute)

Two ways to switch tracks.

Choose the one that fits your signal path.

  • Fader mode (default) — switches via volume automation with smooth Crossfade support. Fully compatible with Bounce / Export
  • Mute mode — switches via track mute/unmute, designed for MIDI signal routing. When sub-tracks carry MIDI instead of audio, volume has no effect — Mute mode is the only way to switch the path
  • Toggle between modes with the Fader / Mute tab on the device panel
  • Mute mode is for live performance and creative sessions only — not compatible with Bounce / Export

6 — Lock Row

Lock what you love, randomize the rest.

Pin your drum pattern in place while melodies shift freely,

or the other way around.

  • Lock icon on the right side of each row, click to toggle
  • Locked rows stay untouched during all Randomize operations
  • Manual grid editing is unaffected by locks

7 — Solo Preview

Listen before you commit. Press and hold any sub-track label to instantly solo-preview that track. Drag across labels to audition different tracks on the fly. Release to restore normal playback.

Creative Use Cases

Drum Pattern Remixing

Place different drum patterns on sub-tracks — original, variation, fill, half-time. GroupMix collages them beat by beat, delivering a fresh groove every time you hit play.

Melodic Variations

Same chord progression, four different arrangements. Let GroupMix switch between piano, synth, strings, and pad — instant arrangement inspiration.

Ambient Textures

Turn on Dynamic mode with a long Crossfade, and let ambient layers slowly evolve. Each bar automatically blends into new textures — perfect for long, atmospheric buildups.

Requirements

  • Ableton Live with Max for Live support (Live Suite, or Live Standard + Max for Live add-on)
  • Device must be placed on a Group Track
  • 2–8 sub-tracks inside the Group
