Full-Chain Tape Emulator for Ableton Live

Reeler is a Max for Live audio effect that puts an entire reel-to-reel tape machine inside your signal chain — from input saturation to physical wear, wow & flutter, beat-synced tape stop, and tonal shaping. Every stage is modeled from real tape physics; every parameter stays locked to your tempo grid.

Reeler is a Max for Live tape emulator with drive, noise, wow & flutter, physical wear, beat-synced tape stop, and tilt EQ — the entire reel-to-reel signal chain in one device.

Why Reeler?

Most tape plugins give you saturation and call it a day. Reeler gives you the whole machine — the drive stage, the oxide hiss, the capstan wobble, the worn-out dropout, and the mechanical stop-and-start that DJs and producers actually reach for.

It's not a preset-based effect. It's a signal chain you can shape, from subtle analog warmth to destroyed VHS texture, with one-knob-per-stage simplicity.

Drive — Tape Saturation

2× oversampled analog-modeled saturation with even-harmonic character. Loudness-compensated so perceived volume stays constant as you push harder. At zero, the signal passes through untouched.

Noise — Tape Hiss, Hum & Crackle

Three-path mono noise generator: shaped tape hiss, mains hum with harmonics, and sparse crackle impulses — authentic analog character from subtle to obvious.

Tone — Tilt EQ

A tilt equalizer with 4th-order highpass at 60 Hz:

  • Dark path: gentle shelf cut at 1.2 kHz + dual LPF at 3 kHz / 5 kHz.
  • Bright path: aggressive shelf boost at 1.5 kHz + dual LPF roll-off.

Sweep from muffled cassette to bright open-reel character with a single knob.

Wear — 6-Stage Physical Degradation

A six-stage degradation chain that models every audible dimension of tape wear:

  1. Pitch Wobble — random pitch drift from unstable transport
  2. HF Loss — progressive high-frequency rolloff with random variance
  3. Gain Instability — level pumping from uneven oxide coating
  4. Soft Saturation — additional harmonic distortion from overwritten tape
  5. Azimuth Offset — stereo phase shift from misaligned playback head
  6. Random Dropout — transient signal loss modeling magnetic particle shedding

All six stages scale linearly with a single Wear knob. At zero, the signal is perfectly transparent.

Wow & Flutter — IEC 60094 Tape Wobble

Dual-band pitch modulation locked to real tape physics:

  • Wow (0.5–6 Hz): Multi-harmonic LFO + filtered noise — slow reel/belt speed drift, up to ±5 ms depth.
  • Flutter (6–100 Hz): Capstan eccentricity and scrape flutter, up to ±1 ms depth.

Mono-summed modulation drives both channels identically, just like a real transport mechanism.

Output — LowCut / HighCut / Gain

  • LowCut: 2nd-order Butterworth HP, 20–2000 Hz exponential sweep.
  • HighCut: 2nd-order LP (Q = 0.5), 200–20000 Hz exponential sweep.
  • Gain: –24 dB to +12 dB output trim. Double-click to reset to 0 dB.
