Drive — Tape Saturation
2× oversampled analog-modeled saturation with even-harmonic character. Loudness-compensated so perceived volume stays constant as you push harder. At zero, the signal passes through untouched.
Noise — Tape Hiss, Hum & Crackle
Three-path mono noise generator: shaped tape hiss, mains hum with harmonics, and sparse crackle impulses — authentic analog character from subtle to obvious.
Tone — Tilt EQ
A tilt equalizer with 4th-order highpass at 60 Hz:
- Dark path: gentle shelf cut at 1.2 kHz + dual LPF at 3 kHz / 5 kHz.
- Bright path: aggressive shelf boost at 1.5 kHz + dual LPF roll-off.
Sweep from muffled cassette to bright open-reel character with a single knob.
Wear — 6-Stage Physical Degradation
A six-stage degradation chain that models every audible dimension of tape wear:
- Pitch Wobble — random pitch drift from unstable transport
- HF Loss — progressive high-frequency rolloff with random variance
- Gain Instability — level pumping from uneven oxide coating
- Soft Saturation — additional harmonic distortion from overwritten tape
- Azimuth Offset — stereo phase shift from misaligned playback head
- Random Dropout — transient signal loss modeling magnetic particle shedding
All six stages scale linearly with a single Wear knob. At zero, the signal is perfectly transparent.
